Last week...
Students presented the innovation they researched with their table teams by participating in a "gallery walk." Students moved about the room from computer to computer seeing what other teams researched and read about the innovations, their purposes, and predictions for how those innovations might change.
Students were given the task to write a business letter to a school official in which they will suggest one innovation they think will improve education. Students created a brainstorm. We also compared and contrasted friendly letters and business letters. They used the R.A.F.T. strategy to discuss how the two types of letters are different in REASON (purpose), AUDIENCE, FORMAT and TOPIC. On Friday, students started rough drafts. Their letters should include two main paragraphs:
Paragraph 1: Identify a student need. Tell all about the innovation that would fulfill that need.
Paragraph 2: Tell why we need this innovation. Tell HOW this innovation will improve learning.
WEEKLY WRITING:
Write a response to the article, "Captive Audience: Has Advertising in School Gone Too Far?".
In your response, address the following:
1. What is the main idea of this article?
Hint: Main idea = the who or what + the most important thing.
2. Who is the author writing TO? (In other words, who is the audience? How do you know?)
3. Give your opinion on this issue. What do you think about advertising in school?
Due: Friday, Nov. 11
